Event: Building stronger community participation - what works and what’s next?

This article was featured in the SCDC Weekly - 4th November 2026

This online SCDC event will explore what needs to happen to support communities to play a larger role in shaping action on environmental, economic, and social issues.

Scotland has a proud tradition of community action. Community councils, tenants' groups, and thousands of local organisations have long worked to improve people's lives and strengthen local communities.

While there is strong support for greater community involvement, many groups face significant barriers, including securing funding, sustaining organisations as volunteers and leaders grow older, and attracting a wider range of people to get involved.

This event will examine these issues, looking at the successes and challenges around turning community concerns into community action and influence.

There will be a focus on the issues groups face around attracting and supporting volunteers so that community organisations can grow and thrive, as well as identifying the community development support people need to take a more active role in local decision-making and service delivery.

Join us to share your experiences, discuss solutions, and help shape support for community action in Scotland. Wednesday 2nd December 2026, 6:30pm - 7:45pm, online. Sign up here.
