Priorities and progress towards Scotland’s just transition

Scotland has committed to reaching net zero emissions of all greenhouse gases by 2045, with a focus on a just transition to ensure this journey is fair and creates a better future for everyone, regardless of where they live, what they do, and who they are.

A just transition covers a range of areas, with poverty and inequality being a key measure of progress, alongside climate and nature, the labour market and public finances.

This report from Future Economy Scotland examines the current progress towards net zero, and the priorities for the new Parliament.

It details some of the positive activity through Scotland’s more progressive tax system, but notes a need for fundamental changes to develop 'pre-distributive' approaches to reducing inequality that “integrate climate and anti-poverty policy more effectively”.

Understanding community priorities is key, and it's vital that lived experiences and collective action are supported to help reduce climate impact, address inequalities, and lessen climate anxiety.

Unbound is a project exploring these themes, with a healthy environment one of the ingredients of a healthy life. Community organisations across Scotland will be bringing people together at local events to understand different ways that climate action can support good health and reduce Scotland's unfair and avoidable inequalities.
