A new report has highlighted the ongoing impact of the cost of living crisis, with disabled people forced to take difficult decisions about eating, heating, and using essential equipment.
Published by Disability Equality Scotland, the research shows that 1 in 6 disabled people are having to choose between keeping warm and using their independent living equipment, with 6 out of 10 disabled people saying their energy bills were the most difficult bill to pay.
4 in 10 said their social care costs have increased over the last year, and many have considered moving to cut their household bills.
One person said: “We have not put the heating on at all because you can always add another layer but charging a wheelchair is non-negotiable."
Another reflected: “You live with constant fear that the one benefit that helps with the extra costs of raising a disabled child will be cut and you won't be able to eat."
Disability Equality Scotland has pressed the new Scottish Government to take "urgent and bold action so that disabled people get the essential support to which they are entitled".
