Challenge Poverty Week: New figures show the scale of action required

This article was featured in the SCDC Weekly - 8th October

A new report published during Challenge Poverty Week has set out the scale of the challenge Scotland faces around poverty.

Joseph Rowntree Foundation analysis shows that 1 in 4 children in Scotland continue to experience living in poverty, with the figure remaining stable since 2018–21.

The report explores priority families, a grouping of six family types introduced by the Scottish Government that face structural barriers trapping them in poverty.

Almost 9 out of 10 children in poverty belong in one of these groups, with most in two or more. This means it's vital these families are supported if Scotland is to reach its 2030 child poverty targets.

Challenge Poverty Week is about what we can do collectively to create a fairer, more compassionate Scotland. As part of its daily themes, this Thursday has a focus on better investment in our communities and the need for fairer funding for organisations which provide vital support to people across the country.

Challenge Poverty Week will be followed by Scotland Demands Better - a march in Edinburgh on 25th October to demand that politicians make the changes we need for a society where every household can thrive and prosper.
