How to build strong community organisations
/This article was featured in the SCDC Weekly - 18th June 2025
How can community groups best achieve their aims? How do they meet community needs? Where to begin? These are some of the questions that the Building Stronger Community Organisations resource helps to answer.
This free online toolkit takes community organisations through 10 modules designed to explore the key things to consider, and important actions to take.
Module 1 of the resource explores what community groups are for, how they organise, and some of the practical considerations around how best to work together.
Key to getting started is a shared understanding of the purpose of the group, what they want to achieve, and the role collective action plays in making change happen.
The module goes into detail about how to have good conversations, how to understand the strengths of the group, and what challenges there may be to overcome. It also explores which of the following 10 modules of the toolkit would be useful for the group to explore.
Launched last year by the Scottish Refugee Council and SCDC, the resource is aimed at refugee communities and refugee supporting groups, but can be used by all types of community organisations.
