Providing support and addressing barriers in co-production

Supporting co-production well allows everyone involved, both users and practitioners, to be empowered, valued and capable of contributing meaningfully.

There are key elements to consider around ensuring this meaningful engagement, including identifying and removing potential barriers to participation.

These barriers may be related to accessibility in both online and in-person spaces, financial considerations such as travel costs, people’s availability around other commitments, or even language or jargon that may not be inclusive.

Considering and addressing these barriers is a key part of the co-production process. Developing relationships allows open dialogue about what positive steps could help support involvement.

That might mean offering and training or learning opportunities to build confidence, and being clear about the purpose and outcomes of the co-production process from the outset.
