Learning resource: Supporting good governance

In an environment of reduced funding and increased demand, many organisations are rightly focused on supporting their communities - but can find it difficult to find the time and space to think about how best to run the organisation itself.

Strong communities need strong, effective, and accountable community groups. To be effective as a group, there needs to be a focus on both running the organisation well and clear plans to achieve its overall aims.

Module 2 of Building Stronger Community Organisations explores this topic, outlining how groups can approach governance, responsibilities, and accountability.

This module includes a Good Governance Action Plan, setting out the four pillars of good governance, and the specific tasks and timescales to work to.

Developed by the Scottish Refugee Council and SCDC, this free online toolkit takes community organisations through 10 modules designed to explore the key things to consider and important actions to take.

With a focus on refugee communities and refugee-supporting groups, the resource can be used by all types of community organisations.
