Community development and climate change

This article was featured in the SCDC Weekly - 26th November

With COP 30 - the annual UN Climate Change Conference - concluding last week, it's timely to explore the role community development plays in supporting local action on climate priorities.

Community development is built upon the idea of people coming together to take action on the issues important to them. With this collective action at the heart of community development, community-led climate action has been shown to make a significant difference in reducing climate impact, addressing inequalities and lessening climate anxiety.

A key focus is on social and economic justice, because we know the impacts of climate change are worse for those who have the least wealth and power - making a just transition essential.

SCDC and SCCAN recently announced Unbound, a new project exploring climate and health and the role communities can play in shaping local and global action.

Unbound will work in each of Scotland’s 32 local authorities to understand local issues, priorities, and needs - and provide practical support, knowledge and skills around both addressing climate impacts and health inequalities.

You can learn more about Unbound here.
