Community Wealth Building Bill consultation

This article was featured in the SCDC Weekly - 7th May 2025

The Scottish Parliament is consulting on the Community Wealth Building Bill introduced earlier this year, beginning the process of consideration and debate as it becomes an Act.

The Scottish Government has said community wealth building will harness “the economic leverage of local ‘anchor’ organisations (such as local councils, health boards and colleges)” to “create jobs, reduce supply chains and strengthen local and regional economies.”

SCDC will be responding to the consultation, and will build on our previous thinking on community wealth building, where we supported the principles of this approach, but set out the importance of increasing the influence communities have on the wider economy.

Separately, SCDC and CHEX have also been contributing to the development of the Scottish Community Alliance’s submission to the consultation, along with other SCA members.

We would be keen to hear from anyone in our network who has any thoughts or suggestions on what we include in our submission, with the call for views open until 23rd May. Please contact Andrew Paterson, Policy and Research Officer at SCDC at andrew@scdc.org.uk.
