Torridon & Kinlochewe Steering Group

The Torridon and Kinlochewe Community Development Plan Steering Group brought together seven community organisations to create a community-led development plan for the area.

The group’s vision is to “invest in the future of our community whilst maintaining and enhancing our natural and wild environment”.

With support from SCDC, the group carried out a community consultation and held face to face community engagement and action planning events – almost 50% of the community participated.  They engaged with partners around the findings of the survey and put together their community development plan, which they will work to deliver over the next 5 years.  They have continued to provide updates to the community about what is happening, via the community council.

As part of the survey, they tested community support for several potential projects around managing land or assets.

Since completing the plan, they have:

  • Secured funding to employ an experienced development worker for the Torridon area to ease the capacity pressure on volunteers

  • Carried out feasibility studies and further community engagement to look at how to take forward two of the asset-based projects they asked the community about

Torridon District Community Association is the lead organisation employing the development officer and leading on many of the actions from the plan.  SCDC supported TDCA to carry out a staff survey and board development day which considered how to take this on in a sustainable manner, without it impacting negatively on the existing work of the Association.

We worked with Torridon & Kinlochewe Community Association to build on their Community Development Plan to develop their Local Place Plan, which is now registered with the Highland Council.  This meant they avoided going back out and asking the community the same things they had already been asked, but still involved engagement and consultation activities that meant people could comment and shape the new plan.
