Susan Paxton

Susan has over 19 years' experience of working within community development at both local and national levels. She worked in North Lanarkshire Council for 10 years as a community worker, senior community worker and senior community learning and development worker before taking up a position at SCDC within the LEAP Support Unit.

As senior development officer for the Healthy Living Centre (HLC) Support Programme she had joint responsibility for the BIG / Health Scotland funded project to provide extensive training and consultancy support to HLCs and their partners wishing to use LEAP for Health to strengthen their planning, monitoring and evaluation processes and systems.

As a Development Manager in SCDC, Susan provides LEAP training and consultancy support to a range of local organisations and partnerships, including delivery of the credit-rated LEAP course. She has extensive experience of supporting participatory planning processes within multi-agency settings and works directly with community groups as part of the ACE programme to improve their effectiveness to address local issues using community development approaches.

Susan undertakes a variety of small consultancy and training projects across Scotland on topics such as strategic planning, community engagement, community capacity building and community development generally. Most recently she has taken lead responsibility for developing and producing the Building Stronger Communities resource which is designed to assist communities and the agencies that support them to collaboratively research, assess and plan for stronger, more resilient communities.

Susan continues to have both a personal and professional commitment to community development, having been a voluntary management committee member, chair and vice chair of the Scottish Community Development Network for 11 years.
