Mothers Against Drugs VI
Community Consultation
The Group
Mothers Against Drugs Care VI was formed in 2001 by a group of women from Irvine who were enraged and disgusted by the volume of drug taking and dealing in their community. They wanted to highlight and tackle the real problem of drugs. The group established itself as a campaigning group throughout Ayrshire and has as its main priority the establishment of a rehabilitation centre in North Ayrshire.
What were they trying to achieve?
The research aimed to find out what the views of local people were about drugs and services to combat drugs in their communities.
How did they go about it?
The group designed a questionnaire which they used in a survey of the public in 11 communities, a postal survey of over 100 community and voluntary organisations, and a survey of 5th and 6th year pupils. The questionnaire asked about people's feelings about drugs in their community, their awareness of drugs services and views on a possible rehabilitation centre and the range of additional services that were required. A total of 666 questionnaires were completed.
What did they learn?
Some of main findings were:
- 94% of respondents believed that drugs was an issue in their community
- 78% supported a rehabilitation centre in North Ayrshire.
The report recommended the establishment of a rehabilitation centre and a means to identify the potential for collaborative delivery of services within the centre.
What difference did it make?
The group prepared a Business Plan which it presented, along with the survey findings, to the area Alcohol and Drug Action Team, who applied to the Scottish Executive for £490,000 to open a Community Rehabilitation Centre. The group also identified a suitable building for the Centre.
