Conference: Building Bridges from Policy to Practice

The conference will focus on themes of supporting people with learning disabilities to fully participate in communities. This is an opportunity to hear what the projects which were successful in receiving Keys to Life Development Fund grants did with their funds. Delegates will hear from the authors of the SCLD report, ‘Building Bridges to a Good Life: A review of asset based, person centred approaches and people with learning disabilities in Scotland’, and have the chance to participate in a dialogues about the challenges and opportunities of adopting asset-based approaches in supporting people with learning disabilities.

Throughout 2016 and 2017, fourteen projects, funded by the Scottish Government’s Keys to life Development Fund, did just that: explored different ways to build on the assets of communities and of people with learning disabilities, to the benefit of both.  At the end of each project, SCLD produced a How to Guide: a concise, practical guide for any organisation interested in using a similar approach in their own locality.

These How to Guides will be launched at the Building Bridges conference.  It is an opportunity to meet and talk to representatives of all the Development Fund projects, and to learn more about what they did, how they did it, and the difference it made.

This conference is for:

  • Community organisations interested in including people with learning disabilities
  • Learning disability organisations interested in adopting a more asset-based approach
  • Anyone interested in promoting a more strategic approach to embedding asset-based approaches.
